Cell Division
|
|
| |
The main form of thymidine kinase is an S phase protein, that is
present in the cell only during cell division. After normal cell
division, it is not released to the body fluids. Malignant cell division
releases small amounts of thymidine kinase to the body fluids, that can
thus be used to evaluate the rate of malignant cell division.
Without the malignant cell division, there would be no malignancy, and
therefore the determination of thymidine kinase focusses on the most
fundamental characteristic of cancer.
Therefore, monitoring cell division as a means of early warning may be
the most effective means of screening for cancer. And because you are
measuring cell division growth, this is supplementary to traditional
tumor markers. |
